This Week's Topic

Thanks to everyone who posted and commented last week, and thanks to Pam and Brett for their crazy ideas of hosting Toon Club spin-offs.

We all dreamed of being courtside during those heated matches. This is what we were missing.

Dig Dug

I didn't have a "system" growing up, but my orthodontist did have one of those table-top arcade games of Dig Dug. I loved it.

Joust Again

Joust was always best played 2-Players with a friend. The biggest trouble was always that jerk of a pterodactyl... And the lava... And the other jousters... Oh, who cares, the game went on forever until you died, so it was a lost cause anyways.

Okay, I lied-- dramatically-- but this is one of my favorite games of all time. If I could get an arcade game system that had Joust, Dig Dug, Xenophobe, and Sinistar on it-- I'd be a very happy guy. Or very frustrated that I can't beat my old scores.

Why they chose a flightless bird as the creature you fly around on I may never know.

T & C: Wood & Water Rage!

Though definitely not a classic, in fact, this game was TERRIBLE, it did bring to life those "gnarly" characters from the T-shirts we were all wearing!

Duck Hunt

You know something, dog? Mocking someone who's obviously frustrated... and holding a gun... with one shot remaining... not the best plan. Man, I shot that dog a lot.

Oh yeah, this game rocked. Punch this guy in the stomache, and he makes a great face.

Imaginary Nerd

Between the 8th and 12th grades I had an imaginary nerd. He was created for the sole purpose of doing my homework -because I certainly wasn't going to do it. Unfortunately he only gave me imaginary answers for everything. I then created my imaginary excuse maker guy to help me cover for the imaginary nerd. It turned out that he was terrible at coming up with good reasons why I didn't have my assignments...but that imaginary diploma sure looks good on my wall.

Larry

This is Larry. He has dreams of accountancy. He keeps trying to convince me that he can do my taxes, but I just can't trust him after that time he convinced me to order that hover craft in the back of the Boys' Life magazine.

This is my buddy Stillson. He startles easily.

Video Game Friends

This is Alida. She's a dragon hunter.
I guess she's an imaginary friend because I made her up in one of those online video game worlds. I take control of this character one or two nights a week and she interacts with other players on the internet in a game called Monster Hunter on Playstation 2.

The game has a more realistic look, but I've cartoonized it myself.





I met this other guy named YuM_TaCos in the same world. He's really high level and a nice guy; always helping me take down the big wyverns. I can almost always find him playing the game.

So I guess he's my imaginary friend, too.

YuM_TaCos... What a name.

The Professor

"The Professor" was a cross between Commander McBragg and Mark Twain. I would talk with him at chain link fences and by tile walls, wherever there were nine squares on point it created a portal through space and time where his head would appear and give me advice and confidence. He was especially good at multiplication.

An Eclectic Mix

Lumpy
Lumpy was more of a nemesis than a friend, but I think he'd haunt me if I didn't include him here. Lumpy is made entirely out of mashed potatoes, with the exception of his pea eyes and dark gravy tongue.

Lumpy is the starchy vegetable treat that chased me, horrifically, in my fevered nightmares. I'm sure if he had ever caught me, he'd have eaten me alive with steak and carrots.

Mr. Cheese
Mr. Cheese was actually my little brother's alter-ego. The only difference between Mr. Cheese and my bro was a voice like Froggy from Little Rascals. I imagine this is what Mr. Cheese would have looked like if he hadn't been trapped in a ten year old boy's body.
The Dragicorn
The Dragicorn is the magical half dragon/half unicorn that I used to imagine myself being friends with when I was playing outside as a child. I'm not sure what transpired to cause a dragon and a unicorn to fall in love, but their child sure was cool.
Freddy Frog
I created Freddy Frog as a comic strip in fourth grade, and drawing literally hundreds of comics about him and his adventures got me through some tough times, including moving to a new town in the middle of the school year. I debated posting him here, as he's very much still alive in my mind and I plan to do something with him eventually, but he is probably the best imaginary friend I ever had. There wasn't a notebook or textbook or coloring book cover or post-it that was safe from a Freddy doodle. He was a constant companion, and, trust me, he had some totally rad skills. (To quote my younger self.)

Imaginary Backup Band!

I never had an imaginary friend, but I ALWAYS have an imanginary backup band! Alternative, jazz, folk, & rock - they're all great & always in tune, even when I'm not (which is always). They usually follow me around the office as well as to & from work..... Fitting a 16-piece swing band into the backseat of the car can get a little crowded, however.

Although my brother and I had loads of fun with our imaginary friend, we forbade our sister from having one.

Toon Club Jr.

I'm thinking of creating a Toon Club Jr. blog for the children of Toon Club if anyone is interested. I know Seth's Makenzie has posted some drawings on his blog, and my Jace and Callie are always drawing, so I figured I'd have them draw the Toon Club topic, and make a place for them to post it every week. I know most of you don't have kids, so hurry and work on that. Tell me what you think.

I haven't been able to post for a while because I've been hanging out in blogger limbo. For some reason when everything switched to the new blogger I got left behind, but thanks to Shane I'm back in. Mojo Jojo

Of all the dozen or more possibile villains I chose Mojo Jojo from the Powerpuff Girls cartoon. Though I've never watched the show, I've always loved his design. Green monkeys with turbans crack me up.

Clarification for Voting on "Best of the Week"

Today I've discussed the idea of a "Best of the Week" vote with a few of you, and this is what the outcome of those conversations seems to be:

1 - The vote will not be official. If you don't want to say which was your favorite or you don't want to feel like you're competing or you really don't have a favorite, please just keep posting drawings like you're already doing. If you never vote for your favorite - no harm done.
2 - No winner will be announced. If you get more votes than anyone else in a week, you can print your own T-shirts or whatever, but Toon Club itself will host no parties or parades on your behalf. No one really wins... it's just a second opportunity in a week to tell someone, "Hey - good job."
3 - If you want to pick a favorite drawing for a topic, post your comment under the new topic for the coming week. Then everyone who wants to see a vote will know where to find it, and everyone who doesn't care can avoid it.

Add A Little Spice

I think we should add a little "favorites" blog to ToonClub, and at the declaration of a new topic everyone can leave a comment in which they vote for their favorite for the previous topic. I think it would be fun, and add another reason to check in with ToonClub. It doesn't have to be a competition so much as just a fun way to conclude each week. All the posts are usually great, but it's just a way to recognize the one that stands out for you personally. Thoughts?

Slow and Steady... But Still Late

I'm loving the posts lately.... Here's my entry for last week, which I'll move to the proper place in a day or so.
