Those Fun-Loving Pirates!

Thanks to Peter Pan, The Pirates of Penzance, The Pirate Movie, Muppet Treasure Island, and The Pirates of the Caribbean ride (among other things), I grew up believing that a pirate was a member of a sea-going performance group. What's with all the singing and dancing? Didn't pirates rob and kill mostly? Our entertainment presents a generally favorable view of the life of a pirate... yo ho.

Avast! I was sketching whatever comes to mind and because of the topic, everything turns into pirates. This turned into a color experiment for me, using a limited pallet. Pirates are cool.

It was a slow week on Toon Club... hopefully we'll get more posts for this week's topic: PIRATES.

Since the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie is now 34th in the all-time box office after just 10 days, I'm guessing most of us have had recent exposure to pirates, so hopefully we'll get a bunch of stuff this week. If you still want to post something for a previous topic, just back-date your post. Do the pirate one first, though, or you'll just keep falling further behind.

At the Memorial Day Parade here in Honesdale,PA I was surprised at how few people knew proper parade flag etiquette. Thus inspiring my two weeks in one post.

The Patriotic Superhero

So... Why Superman? Well, I think he's the most patriotic superhero around. The movie opened this week. Most importantly, with the world we live in today, I just think we need strong, brave individuals who believe in Truth, Justice, and the American Way. It's something we can all aspire to.

My Wife Loves the 4th!

My wife, Melinda, loves the Forth of July... it's her favorite holiday. Before I met her she got a tattoo of a blue star on her hip. No one really knows this, it's hidden all the time (almost, wink wink). So, today, she has given an exclusive look at this show of patriotism I like to call:

Bus Grouch

The clouds in this image are symbolic of this troubled man's life. You can't really blame him for not wanting to be around other people (which is ironically impossible when you ride a bus). You see, when he was just a lad, his sister told him that he was actually adopted, and despite that it was a joke given in the usual older-sister fashion, he never would believe anything else, despite his parents' assurances. That incident, of course, led him to the conclusion that noone wanted him, and by this he has worked out his existence. As you can see now, he takes up as much of the bench as possible to assure that a second person can't sit anywhere near him, and don't even think about trying to strike up a bus conversation.

...Still together after all these years. Originally I was thinking of drawing just a bunch of old people like Guy did, but these are the only two that made it out of the pencil, so I stuck 'em together. The old man accidentally looks a wee bit like Nebecracker from Monster House, and the old woman looks accidentally like my own Grandma (a bit).

Introducing, the Grump! Pessimist extraordinare! Nothing tastes as it should. Every fabric scratches irritatingly. If it's raining it ought to be sunny. Sunny, and "The drought will kill us all!" His opinion is the only one that truly matters... just ask him.

Alien Life Forms: Brothers

When I orignally thought of what I would do for this topic I'd imagined doing a really detailed sketch of a critter of alien origin; then this idea crept into my head and I couldn't shake it. If I get really ambitious, maybe I'll post another before the week is out. Can't wait to see what you guys come up with.

Well, it looks like nearly everyone got to play this round, so it's okay to move on. It's Ken's turn, and the topic is "Alien Life Forms". As usual entries are due by next Monday. Ready, set, draw!

Rough and Reddy

Rough is an ex-federal marshal waiting for trouble on the noon train, Reddy is his red-haired, Italian mail order bride who has captured his heart.

I also couldn't let this topic get pass me. Especially after two weeks of trying to draw something. I re-watched High Noon and Once Upon a Time in the West again for inspiration. The image feels like a cross between the two. It's like hearing Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling played by an obnoxious harmonica.

I've also realized how dependant I've become on my Wacom. Painting with a mouse is like having had my hands cut of at the wrists.

Paint 'yer wagon!

Yeeehaw! I know, I know... I'm cuttin' it close again with another mostly colorless entry, but I just had to post. How could I pass up the wild west? This stranger just mosied into town and is causin' a ruckus, but just you wait 'til the sherriff gets his hands on 'im. He's gonna paint his wagon, gonna paint it fine; gonna use oil-base paint, because the wood is pine. Anyone? Anyone? It must be late. What am I still doing up? G'night everyone.

Before they were hunted into extinction in 1934, Land sharks posed a serious threat to ranch owners (and their cattle) all across the Western United States. Git along little doggies!

Peg leg Smith

I didn't have time to do anything new for this topic but it was a fun topic and I wanted to get something in. I had this old artistic experiment hanging around and thought I post it. Hope that's okay.

Here's a little info about the subject:
Thomas L. Smith, better known as 'Peg Leg,' 1801-1866, was a mountain man, prospector, and spinner of tall tales. Legends regarding his lost gold mine have grown through the years, and countless people have searched the desert for its fabulous wealth.

During a pitched battle in 1827 with Indians, he took a bullet to his leg, shattering the bone. His companions, who thought it would be fatal, carried him away from the battle. Not having any surgery tools on hand, and in an effort to save his own life, Peg Leg Smith took a knife and began sawing away at his lower leg. Between periods of nausea, fainting and swearing at his friends, he managed to cut off his own leg. Smith survived and later carved himself a wooden leg and learned to walk with it, thus came about the name of "Peg Leg" Smith.
